Gussie's Kitchen, which is based at St Augustine's Church, has provided more than 1,000 free food parcels to people who are struggling during the current crisis.

Now, generous Freemasons who meet at Spencer Lodge in Littleover, Derby, have dug deep to donate £2,500 to Gussie’s Kitchen.

A spokesperson for Gussie’s Kitchen said: “We are overwhelmed by such an amazing amount of money at this critical time with so many people needing help.

“It will be put to good use in this deprived part of Chesterfield.

“We cannot thank the Freemasons enough for the difference it will make.

“It will help us to meet the challenges of this pandemic by enabling us to buy additional produce to deliver our new scheme which is aimed at gradually supporting households in food poverty to independence.

“The scheme will, we believe, also help maintain and improve health and well-being by working with a variety of agencies to assist with other challenges such as rent arrears, energy poverty, benefit issues and returning to work,” the spokesperson added.

Gussie’s Kitchen launched in 2016.

Before the pandemic, the project operated a cafe to provide people with hot, nutritious and affordable meals.
