Some people have seen the funny side – but others have said it wasn’t an appropriate joke given the fact many businesses are in reality closing amid the pandemic.

The Derbyshire Times has asked Einstein’s if it wants to respond to the criticism but hasn’t yet received a response.

Shortly after midnight, Einstein’s put on its Facebook page: “It is with the heaviest of hearts that we break the news that we have been dreading.

“Our doors are closed and they’ll not be reopening…

“It all just got too much.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank our incredible team for their amazing efforts over the last six years; we couldn’t have made such wonderful memories without you. Each and every one of you is the absolute bee’s knees…

“Huge thanks go to our many loyal patrons – we have shared some great times, clinking steins and scoffing down some blinking-great food.

“And thank you to our many great suppliers – we wish you luck for the future.

“Thanks all, for now it’s over. And. Out.”

At around 8am, they posted: “... well, the doors won’t be reopening until they’ve had another coat of varnish!

“So… We may have been telling a little porky pie a little earlier on. *Hangs head in shame...

“Well… It is April 1 – if you walked in to that one you probably did deserve it!

“There’s no way that we’re packing our suitcases and marching out of town – oh no!

“Quite the contrary, we’ve actually been sprucing the place up and we LITERALLY CANNOT WAIT to fling open those doors and holler ‘c’mon in guys’ – or should that be ‘c’mon in – and out the back guys!’

“Yep, the floors had a good do, the kitchen’s been extended so that we can serve up even more pates of hearty home-cooked food, and outside’s had a spot of TLC.

“We will be open from April 12 so for bookings and all that jazz, get in touch!”
