A total of 217 people have sadly died with Covid-19 at Chesterfield Royal since March, a spokesperson for the hospital said on Thursday.

On its Twitter account, the Crooked Spire said: “Normally the parish church bells ring out as a new year begins.

“After the light show at 9.30pm (on New Year’s Eve), the tenor bell will be tolled for each of the Covid-19 deaths at Chesterfield Royal Hospital in memory of all who suffered in 2020, and in hope for 2021.”

The light show refers to the event that has been taking place over Christmas to illuminate the spire.

In November, it was announced that the Crooked Spire had been awarded a ‘lifeline’ grant from the Government’s Culture Recovery Fund, enabling important repairs to be carried out on the historic building.

That work is now underway.
