Life is hard for an animal that has been neglected or unloved and rescuers in Chesterfield have their work cut out nursing them back to health and gaining their trust.
But with patience and care, dogs and cats who may not have had the best start in life can make the best, most loyal companions.
Chesterfield RSPCA is looking for forever homes with loving owners for ten furry friends currently residing at the charity’s shelter on Spital Lane.
If you would like to adopt one of these dogs or cats, you will need to apply online at www.chesterfield-rspca.org.uk

5. Poppy
Poppy is a husky cross who is six years and nine months old. She is shy, barks at strangers but can be calmed with a reassuring stroke or tickle. Poppy can be left on her own for short periods and could live in a household with secondary school age children but one preferably without a cat. Photo: Chesterfield and North Derbyshire RSPCA
When Reggie was brought into the care of Chesterfield RSPCA, he was infested with fleas that were burrowing into what little fur remained. The two-year-old is now flea-free and likes to be gently tickled on his head. He is shy and would prefer a quiet home where he would be an indoor cat. Photo: Chesterfield and North Derbyshire RSPCA
Ronnie was brought into the shelter at the same time as Reggie and was also riddled with fleas. The parasites have now gone and the quiet two-year-old is looking for a loving home where he would be an indoor cat. He may be able to live with a dog or another cat. MIdnight's short life of one year and nine months has been one of constant upheaval which has made her anxious and stressed. But she is sweet and sociable and gives the impression of being a very happy cat until you notice that her food is untouched and her eyes are darting from side to side as if her meal is going to wrenched away. Could you give Midnight a forever home where she will feel safe and loved? Photo: Chesterfield and North Derbyshire RSPCA
