Bolsover District Council is to invest the money in Castle Leisure Park, which will see the current all terrain pitch replaced with a multi-use games area and repairs to buildings and facilities.

Further works have also been identified to bring the rest of the facilities up to standard as part of a five-year plan.

The park has seen many acts of ant-social behaviour over the years, including its hot water cylinder and pipes stolen as well damage to the cricket pavilion and fences.

It is hoped that by installing the multi-use games area on a ‘free to use’ basis it will attract younger elements of the community to use the facilities.

Councillor Mary Dooley, cabinet member for leisure said: “Over the years the site has been subjected to a continual stream of vandalism that has rendered some of the facilities unusable.

“Our aim is to continue to provide leisure and sporting facilities on this site and this refurbishment will help us do that in a sustainable manner.

“This investment is much needed and will improve the facilities and also provide local people with the chance to use the MUGA free of charge. It will also tie in very nicely with the huge investment we are making in the refurbishment of the model village.”

The park currently has a floodlit five-a-side all terrain pitch, football pitches, cricket pavillion and bowling greens.
