From Chesterfield’s Crooked Spire to the beautiful scenery of the Peak District National Park, there is plenty to love about the county – which is filled with unique attractions and historic landmarks.
As an outsider, I’ve been acclimatising to life here gradually – and have put together a list of some of the things that I’ve learnt since moving to Derbyshire.

13. Derbyshire’s connection to Robin Hood
I’ve also discovered the story behind this Peak District chasm, which is both naturally and historically remarkable. It was known as a secret place of worship in the 15th century, and myths also claim that Robin Hood and Friar Tuck hid here from the authorities. Photo: Photo © Anthony O'Neil (cc-by-sa/2.0)

14. Industrial heritage
I’ve also discovered Derbyshire’s remarkable industrial heritage, with the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site sitting along the River Derwent. It was here that the modern factory system was born in the 18th century - which later spread across Europe and the United States. Photo: Brian Eyre

15. Unique events
There are plenty of unique events that take place in and around Matlock that I’ve discovered. On Boxing Day, the town’s annual raft event takes place - which sees people paddle down the River Derwent on homemade rafts through Matlock, Matlock Bath and Cromford Meadows. This amazing festive event supports the Royal National Lifeboat Institute - having raised more than £250,000 since it was first held. The Matlock Bath illuminations take place every year, featuring a spectacular parade of illuminated boats along the River Derwent - along with entertainment and firework shows. Photo: Brian Eyre

16. Great places to eat
I’ve discovered that Derbyshire is home to a number of great places to eat - such as The Bulls Head at Holymoorside. Photo: Brian Eyre
