Off-roaders are council issue

I REFER to the news item about Friends of the Peak District’s criticism of Derbyshire County Council in not taking part in the new forum set up to reduce the problems of motorised off-roading on green lanes in the Peak District.

This forum brings together the official bodies concerned, the Peak District National Park Authority and the police, plus representatives from the off-roading clubs, and those opposed to off-roading.

Derbyshire County Council has the legal responsibility for maintenance and safety on these green lanes and their failure to participate in the forum is very unhelpful.

Derbyshire County Council has had a policy on off-roading since 2003, but seems to have done very little to implement it in the Peak District.

There are many practical and safety issues awaiting urgent attention not just Bradley Lane and School Lane, which seem to have been “under consideration” for some years.

Many of these green lanes are narrow and hilly and were never intended to be used by 4x4’s, quad bikes and trail bikes.

I hope that the money saved by boycotting the forum will be spent on tackling the backlog of legal, maintenance and safety problems on green lanes in the Peak District
