LETTER: Can you help save Chesterfield Civic Society?

Formed more than 50 years ago out of public concern for a better Chesterfield and conservation of the town centre, the Chesterfield Civic Society has an illustrious past. '¨Highlights are helping to save the historic town Market Place from development and later the award-winning conservation of the Eyre Chapel. '¨In recent times it persuaded the council to direct Lottery funding to facilitate the reinstatement of railings around the Crooked Spire church and to extend the town-centre conservation area. '¨The society has also contributed to public landscaping, George Stephenson's statue at the station, and provided commemorative blue plaques as well as running a programmes of talks. '¨It campaigns for a more attractive town centre and for a better deal for pedestrians. It is not always successful but it can help make a difference by raising awareness of civic issues and working with the council and others to make our town a better place to live and work.

We ask those who love Chesterfield and have the enthusiasm, ability, time and commitment to come and help revitalise the civic society. Otherwise, it is likely to be wound up by March 2017.

If you are one of those people, please contact me at: [email protected] or come along to our annual general meeting at the Eyre Chapel on Tuesday, September 13, at 7.30pm
The meeting will start after Lucy Pedlar’s talk on how we make older homes more energy efficient without spoiling them.
