It's been a long time coming - but there's finally hope in 2020

Over the last few days I’ve experienced something we haven’t had for a while – hope.

First there was the news from across the Atlantic that America had voted in a new president.

Yes, the margin was much smaller than expected, but it did a least signal some sort of return to normality (or normalcy as the US commentators kept saying ) after four years when you daren’t look at your mobile phone in case you found out World War III had just been declared – via Twitter.

I know I’ll probably jinx things by saying this, but it was also refreshing that the feared civil war and coup d’etat didn’t happen after the US results were called.

There are obviously legal battles still being fought, but I genuinely feared there’d be an explosion of real violence in the streets when the election was called for Joe Biden - especially when images of Trump supporters in full combat gear and carrying machine guns started surfacing.

There’s still time for things to go horribly, horribly, wrong once the courts hand out their pronouncements and finally name who will be the most powerful person on the planet for the next four years.

But so far, so far, things are looking much better than I feared.

And then to top it all off, thi s week we had news the whole world has been waiting for – details of a success ful Covid-19 vaccine trial.

2 020 has been a pretty miserable year so far .

Right now we’re in the second lockdown of just the last six months, many businesses are closed, people are fearful for their loved ones and their livelihoods.

The pubs are shut and even kids’ sport has been cancelled.

If all that weren’t enough, we’ve also just had the UK terrorism threat level raised to ‘severe’.

There are plenty of caveats around the Pfizer announcement about their vaccine breakthrough and we’re still a long way from resigning the coronavirus pandemic to the history books.

But even on a dank November day, there’s a definite sense that maybe, just maybe, there’s a glimmer of light at the end of what has been a very long and very dark tunnel. It’s been a long time coming but may be hope yet for 2020...
