Much-loved Clowne pub landlord loses cancer battle

Peter Egley – who was also known as Eggman – died aged 57 in Chesterfield’s Ashgate Hospice earlier this month.

Born in Renishaw, Mr Egley spent almost three decades living in Clowne, where he was landlord of the village’s Anchor Inn for 12 years.

Leah Harper, Mr Egley’s eldest daughter, said: “He was very well-known in the area and a lot of people are very sad about his passing.

“Peter was a wonderful character. He was larger than life, very outgoing and a joker. He loved his family more than anything and would do anything for them.

“He will be very sadly missed.”

Mr Egley worked as a coal miner after leaving school and took redundancy in 1992. He then became landlord of the Anchor Inn on Mill Street.

After leaving the Anchor Inn, he worked in various other roles until he found a job in the construction industry which he loved.

Mr Egley was a keen sports fan. He was a life-long Sheffield United fan and liked golf.

He also enjoyed holidays to his home in Goa and weekends away and was president of the Clowne Liberal Club.

Mr Egley leaves behind wife Lyn, daughters Leah and Tracy, granddaughter Kailey, brothers Paul, Mark and David, sisters Lynn, Carol, Lorraine, Pauline, Sandra and Dawn and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service is due to take place at Clowne church at 2.30pm on Friday, January 29. This will be followed by burial at Clowne cemetery and a wake at Renishaw club. The family requests donations to Ashgate Hospice. A collection plate will be provided after the service.

Mr Egley was diagnosed with lung cancer which spread to his brain. He responded well to treatment but sadly his condition deteriorated. He died on Wednesday, January 13.
