MEPs bid to avert decline of bees

East Midland MEP Emma McClarkin is creating a buzz about the vital role of bees in the food chain.
The Conservative politician is supporting a European Parliament campaign for a study into the decline of the insects after finding that 71 of the 100 crop species which provide 90% of food are pollinated by bees.

The cross-party Written Declaration urges the European Council and the European Commission to “promote further study, convening a group of experts to assess available evidence on pollinator declines and to determine the extent and the possible causes of colony losses in order to plan future EU action on a solid and objective scientific basis.”
