Matlock’s Mac is on the mend after car crush horror

David ‘Mac’ McKenzie, who owns McKenzie’s Garage, in Smedley Street, is recovering at home following the incident on August 29 when a car fell on top of him while he was working underneath it.

The 59–year–old was taken by air ambulance to Chesterfield Royal Hospital where he was treated for multiple broken bones.

His wife, Liz, explained that Mac underwent an operation to repair his pelvis while in hospital, and his ribs are being left to repair on their own.

“He’s mending well and doing office work from home at the moment,” she said.

“He’s very strong mentally and physically and that’s why the doctor’s let him come home.”

Liz added that the support the couple has been given from the public has been ‘fantastic’ and they have received more than 200 ‘get well’ cards. She thanked all well wishers.

She said the staff in the garage have been doing a brilliant job in his absence and added that she thought it wouldn’t be took long before Mac was able to walk properly and return to work.

The Smedley Street Business Group plans to fundraise for the air ambulance in the future as a thank you to the service that saved Mac’s life.
