Matlock star clinches new record time

MATLOCK Cycling Club’s hilly 25-mile time-trial took place on Saturday in bitterly cold conditions.

A total of 16 riders braved the course which starts in Rowsley before climbing through Youlgreave to the Long Rake, then Monyash, down the A515 to Newhaven before descending to Grangemill with the final climb towards the Miners Standard before a downhill finish to Alport. Peter Colledge won in a new veterans’ record time of 1hour 6 mins and 17 secs. Arch rival Chris Green settled for third with mechanical issues, and Sheffrec Cycling Club’s Daryl May took second in 1hour 9mins and 45 secs. Youngster Patrick Smart put in an excellent display to finish in eighth spot in 1:17:05. Christine Howard finished as first female in 1:29:18 for 14th overall. Next week riders will do it again with company from other club riders as MCC puts on its annual Open Hilly Time Trial.

MCC riders attended the Cannock Chase Winter Classic Mountain Bike XC event on Sunday. Arthur Green won the boys Youth Under 16’s. He was joined on the podium by MCC teammate Gregg Booker. Sarah Lomas was first in the Youth Under 16’s.

Ffyona Booker finished the girls youth race in third spot while local rider Tim Elsmore Martin took second in his category. In the Under 10 girls, Michaela Dick won with elder sister Kirsten taking third in the Under 13 girls. Emma Martin came second in the women’s and Gareth Ferguson came fifth in the men’s seniors.
