Matlock–made sledges travel across icy landscape

A set of Matlock–made steel sledges designed to take part in an Antarctic expedition are making steady progress across the polar landscape.

The 14 ‘skoots’, designed and manufactured by William Twigg Ltd, in Bakewell Road, are carrying essential supplies of fuel on the 2000–mile journey led by Sir Ranulph Fiennes.

The veteran explorer hopes to be the first to cross Antarctica in winter.

The skoots have been attached to two specially modified Finning Caterpillar tractors.
