Matlock civic chiefs fear trees are under threat

In August, Derbyshire Dales District Council approved plans to build a McDonald’s drive-thru on the former Madison’s site on Bakewell Road.

Matlock Civic Association is concerned the lime trees on the road verge in front of the derelict bar will be felled so the restaurant is more prominent.

John Tresadern, of the association, said: “The trees were planted specifically to enhance the northern approach to the town and should not be removed.

“The last thing we need along a stretch of road with several negative visual elements is the removal of key features which currently help to soften the view.”

Richard Tarbatt, director of developers William Twigg (Matlock) Ltd, said: “We do not intend to remove the trees in front of McDonald’s, unless we are asked to by the council.

“However, as part of our planning application, we submitted a report from an expert which states that the two trees in front of the proposed McDonald’s are structurally poor and are exhibiting textbook structural defects. The expert goes on to recommend removal and replacement.

“We will be working with the council to improve the landscaping and enhance the site, which is currently an eyesore.”
