Man who brandished a knife has been jailed

A man who brandished a knife in a Derby street has been jailed.

Residents living in Airedale Walk, Alvaston, called police at 5.40am on Monday, June 27m to report that Cleveland Howell was in the street with a knife, shouting and making threats.

Police went straight to the scene and arrested Howell at his home in Airedale Walk.

He appeared at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates Court on Tuesday, June 28, and pleaded guilty to possessing a knife in public and using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent to cause fear of violence.

The 53-year-old was jailed for 26 weeks.

Derbyshire police is currently running a knife amnesty and education programme across the county. People have until Sunday, July 3, to surrender knives at 14 secure bins. Police have also been working with partners to educate people about the dangers of carrying a knife and the consequences.

Knife bins can be found at the following locations Derby Market Place, St Mary’s Wharf Police Station, Prime Parkway, Chester Green, Cotton Lane Police Station, Allenton, Peartree Police Station, Peartree Road, Normanton, Ilkeston Police Station, Heanor Road, Long Eaton Police Station, Midland Street, Swadlincote Police Station, Civic Way, Chesterfield Police Station, New Beetwell Street, Clay Cross Police Station, Pilsley Road, Ripley Police Station, Wyatt’s Way, Buxton Police Station, Silverlands, Buxton Market Place, Glossop Police Station, Ellison Street and Matlock Police Station, Bank Road.

Ensure the blade is wrapped before depositing it in an amnesty bin, using cardboard, bubble wrap or something similar.

Any knives or blades too large to fit in the bins can be handed it an inquiry offices at St Mary’s Wharf, Chesterfield and Buxton police stations.
