“The step-mother and father of the defendant started shouting at each other and the defendant went upstairs and shouted at Angela Pashley but after 15 minutes Mr and Mrs Pashley started arguing again.

“The defendant started to punch walls in the hall and Mrs Pashley’s daughter tried to calm him down but as they went back upstairs to the parents Shane Pashley punched Mrs Pashley to the side of the head.

“She fell off her bed and had suffered a lump to her head and bruising to her elbow as she fell.”

The court heard how Angela Pashley did not wish to pursue the matter but the defendant accepts punching her in the face.

Shane Pashley pleaded guilty to the assault after the incident on May 8.

Defence solicitor Benjamin Strelley said: “It’s been a difficult time for the defendant because he has learning difficulties and he has found the time in police custody difficult and it has been the first time he has had to live away from the family home.”

District Judge Andrew Davison acknowledged that the catalyst for the assault had been the argument between his step-mother and father.

He sentenced Shane Pashley to a 12 month community order with a Rehabilitation Activity Requirement.

The defendant was also fined £80 and must pay an £145 in costs and a victim surcharge.
