Adam Bleakman, group manager with Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Earlier this morning firefighters rescued an elderly gentleman from a fire in a bungalow on Rossendale in Ilkeston.

“Tragically, despite the efforts of firefighters and East Midlands Ambulance Service we have been informed that the gentleman sadly passed away later this morning.

“The thoughts of everyone at Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service are with the family and friends of the deceased at this distressing time.”

The most likely cause of the blaze was accidental due to an electrical appliance, according to the fire service.

Officers will now prepare reports for the coroner.
