A court heard that Michael Scott Smith had been barred from contacting a 15-year-old girl after her mother raised concerns with the police.

But Smith, 24, continued to have sex with the girl who described him “as controlling and violent”. He questioned her about friends, changes to her hairstyle and once slapped her. He then had sex with a friend of the girl, who was also 15. This girl was hit by Smith of Arundel Close, Chesterfield, who appeared at Derby Crown Court.

Judge Jonathan Gosling told him: “Girls of that age are easy prey to men and the law is there to protect young girls against this.”

The judge said both girls were “bullied” and barred him from trying to contact them again. Smith was also banned from being alone with any girl under 16. Smith pleaded guilty to sexual activity with two children under 16 and two counts of assault by beating. The offences took place between May and November last year, when he was arrested.

Simon Eckersley, mitigating, said: “He met the first girl in an innocent fashion. She was not substantially under the age of consent.” The relationship developed and the girl agreed to having sex. The second girl also consented to sex and he only hit her “in the context of play fighting,” added Mr Eckersley.

Julia King, prosecuting, said the first victim described the relationship at the outset as “no problems, normal.”

Miss King told the court: “He became controlling, manipulative and did not like her speaking to friends.”

After the mother’s concerns, Smith was served with an “abduction notice” which he signed in August. But he kept on meeting the girl for sex. Through the initial relationship, he met his second victim and was aware of her age. Smith had a previous conviction for assault.
