LETTER: The never-ending disruption goes on
I dare say the windscreen replacement firms have been having a field day. I suppose in six months’ time this will again be a patchwork quilt of utilities sunken trenches.
But, the so-called Northern Gateway project. Granted, the Co-Op and Knifesmithgate (such an elegant part of the town once upon a time but which now resembles downtown Gotham City on a dark, wet and windy Monday night) want sorting out. What worries me is the period of time that the Saltergate multi-storey is to be closed for. Have you noticed that the work is to start just before Christmas - what’s new?

Hide AdThe donut car park? To be closed completely and covered with cafes and — for heaven’s sake — a business enterprise centre, or something like that. Why not a cyclist’s tourist information centre as well. I would hazard to guess that if this car park closes it will virtually finish off this already struggling town centre completely. Just as a matter of interest, does anyone know, or does anyone care, how many cars enter and leave that car park every week with people spending money in the town? No, of course not and if they do know they’re not saying.
I don’t know if anyone has noticed that the world has changed dramatically in the last 20 years. Shopping habits have changed. People who thought not too many years ago that they would never buy online do so regularly now with complete ease. Planners who keep allowing edge-of-town retailors to settle cannot expect the town centre to be busy as well .
There is only so much money to be spent.
Only so much footfall to go round. Filling the town with more and more cafes is NOT going to save Chesterfield town centre. Please, please make the most of what we already have.
The market....words fail me. Rather like your ankles and knees failing you on those cobbles.
That’s it. I could go on ...but hey what do I know?
What is my opinion worth?

And I do wish the Derbyshire Times would have SOME input sometimes. Either in favour of projects or against. Stop sitting on the fence waiting for your readers to do all the work all the time. Don’t forget CBC and DCC HAVE to go to YOU to publish their public notices, there is no other paper to do it so you don’t have to worry on that score.
