LETTER: Children should be taught manners
When I was at junior school we used to have 'servers' at the table.
All meals were overseen by either a teacher or dinner ladies. In the 70s we had to lay out the tables properly and make sure there was a fresh jug of water. Old fashioned as it may seem, we had proper plates and beakers.
Each part of the meal was put on the table in metal containers. It was a privilege to serve (if you were confident enough). You could only have seconds if 1) you had eaten everything on your plate. 2) If there was enough left.
I never felt like a slave and it taught us how to set a table properly and also, when you went out for a meal you knew what to expect as everything was familiar. I think in these days of fast food it is a good thing for children to be taught the correct manners and etiquette.
You learn by doing, we have lost so much in modern times.
