LETTER: Chesterfield Market has been severely neglected

I came to Chesterfield in 1987 and the market was very impressive.

It was bustling, busy and a joy to visit and walk around. Now in 2016, what an eyesore with most stalls not taken, food cafes smelling of fried food and people smoking.

I feel it is a very neglected place.

The pictures portrayed of the market is of lovely coloured canopies and it being full of people.

I feel it’s a sham.

They say it is one of the largest open markets in England — an open neglected space with cobble stones to twist your ankle on.

I took my mother in a wheel chair many years ago. Her teeth were chattering and her bones shaking over these supposedly authentic cobble stones. I loved the market and myself, friends and relatives used to shop there but no more, our money is going else where. Thank goodness for the fruit and veg.

So sorry Chesterfield, what with the market being in severe decline in my view and the drinkers and smoking at the top of the library steps, it’s not a place to take my grandchildren. What a sad, neglected town.
