The library centrepiece was unveiled in time for the Wirksworth Carnival and Well-Dressing weekend, which took play on May 28 and 29.

Library manager Mark Lilley said: “When Knit and Natter member Jane McCabe first mentioned knitting a well-dressing display, we all looked in disbelief.

“But seeing is believing and the group actually pulled this ambitious project off with flying colours – the display is a work of art.

“The well-dressing theme was ‘Roald Dahl’s centenary’ to coincide with the forthcoming children’s Summer Reading Challenge.

“This is where youngsters are invited to read six books throughout the summer holidays, receiving incentive prizes for each book.

“The colourful display is the perfect backdrop to inspire the children to take up the reading challenge when they visit. Our Knit and Natter group meet every other Tuesday at 2.30pm and everyone is warmly welcomed to sit, chatter, knit and natter with a cup of tea – or two. Hilarious stories often unfold whilst knitting their latest masterpieces – they have great fun.”
