Medical assistance was provided and an ambulance attended but the man, who was in his 50s, was pronounced dead by a paramedic at 2.40am.

Derbyshire Constabulary informed the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) of the death shortly afterwards and an investigation was launched at 4.20am.

IPCC investigators have attended the scene and CCTV footage and other evidence has been gathered at the custody unit.

Initial accounts have also been provided by police officers and staff.

The man’s next of kin have been informed and a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

IPCC commissioner Derrick Campbell said: “Our sympathies are with the man’s family and anyone else affected by his death.

“Our inquiries are obviously at a very early stage and we will be carrying out a very thorough investigation of all the circumstances.”

A Derbyshire Constabulary spokesman added: “As the matter is being investigated independently we can make no further comment at this time.”
