Hurricane set to bathe Derbyshire in September heat

A hurricane is set to pull warm air over Derbyshire next week – making the start of autumn feel more like summer.

Hurricane Cristobal is expected to move up the east coast of the United States before hurtling across the Atlantic towards the UK.

But unlike Hurricane Bertha, which battered the country with torrential rain and heavy winds, the weather pattern should boost temperatures as it draws up high pressure from the south.

A spokesman for the Met Office said: “The storm will result in an area of high pressure building over the UK.

“This high pressure will be maintained through next week as the jet stream moves to the north of the UK, bringing settled conditions across the country.”

Nick Prebble, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, added: “It’s turning nice next week, certainly warmer than it’s been over the last few weeks.

“Pretty much across the UK we will see above average temperatures.

“Unfortunately I don’t think it is going to be too long lasting. I think temperatures will be dropping by the following weekend, though they may remain just above average, around the 20C mark, with some rain coming in.

“Hopefully this won’t be the last warm spell, the weather can be nice right into November, so I wouldn’t write it off yet.”
