Highfields pupils show off star quality in school show

Students took to the stage for dance, music and theatre shows at Highfields School at the annual evening of talent event.

More than 100 performers from years seven to 11 put on an exciting programme of dance pieces including contemporary, street and modern styles.

Many of the performances were choreographed by Highfields students and showed the skills that the students develop through regular dance lessons.

Matlock theatre and dance school Essential Energy, also performed at the event.

Head of dance, Kerryn Wise, said: “Our students work very hard to make our annual showcase of dance something special. Dance develops confidence and self discipline in our youngsters.”

Musical talent was on display at the Easter concert at Highfields on March 15, when students from across the whole school performed in a range of groups, from jazz, clarinet, flute, folk and orchestra to solo singing and choirs.

One highlight was the junior choir singing Revolting Children from Matilda and Aint No Mountain High Enough.

Head of music Kris Rowley added: “It’s always astonishing to see the standard and commitment from our youngsters when they have the chance to perform at our concerts. I am very proud of the range of talent at Highfields.”

And the drama department also had a busy week with A-level students performing their final theatre pieces.

“The year 12 play Tissue had breast cancer as its theme, and students held a large cake sale to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer.

Head of drama, Catherine Worsley, said: “The quality of acting, stage management and direction has been very impressive.”

Highfields is now working hard in after school sessions preparing for its annual musical, High School Musical – set to be performed in July.
