Stefan Hawcroft, 29, of Unstone, a firefighter in Derbyshire, has been battling a brain tumour for five years but was sadly told on March 5 he may only have four weeks to live.

Rebecca said: “I was devastated. I said ‘are you joking?’. I could not believe it.

“Stefan is very motivated, generous, kind-hearted and positive above all.”

Due to the uncertainty about Stefan’s health, the couple had to bring their wedding forward by 18 months and tied the knot last month.

“We were planning on getting married in 2019 but obviously with things how they are we had to bring it forward and we had a lovely, intimate ceremony in Sheffield,” Rebecca said.

A fundraising page set up by Stefan’s sister Emma Louise - describing him as ‘the bravest man I know’ - received more than £15,000 in donations in 24 hours.

“I just want to thank everyone who has contributed and tried to get it noticed,” Rebecca said. “The amount of support has been incredible.”

The family are hoping to take him to a clinic in Germany or the Charring Cross Hospital in London for immunotherapy treatment - which is not available on the NHS.

Despite the brain tumour, Stefan, a firefighter of 10 years, still continued to work.

“Any donations would be truly amazing in this difficult time,” Emma said.
