Football fan hit by car on way to Nottingham Forest match

A man who was hit by a car in Long Eaton was a football fan on his way to an away game.

Queens Park Rangers fan Alan Barnes, 68, was on his way to the team’s game against Nottingham Forest.

The incident occurred in at Market Place Long Eaton. A coach carrying members of the QPR Loyal Supporters Association had stopped at a pub on the way to the City Ground.

Mr Barnes was struck by an oncoming vehicle when he stepped in to the road as fans were getting back on the coach.

QPR’s manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink tweeted: “The boys and I would like to wish lifelong and dedicated #QPR fan, Alan Barnes, a very speedy recovery following his accident last night.”

“Alan, a devoted supporter, was knocked down by a car on route to the game last night. All our thoughts are with him #qpr”

The incident happened at around 6.35pm on Tuesday (January 26), close to Natwest bank. It caused delays as police blocked off Tamworth Road and Salisbury Street. The roads remained closed until 10pm.

Mr Barnes is believed to have undergone surgery.
