Firefighters issue statement after blaze causes gridlock in north Derbyshire town

Firefighters have released details about a blaze which led to road clusures and serious congestion across north Derbyshire.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service say the fire was in an industrial unit on High Street, Eckington, and crews from Staveley, Chesterfield, and Dronfield fire stations attended the scene on Friday, August 13 at 2pm.

Derbyshire police closed Henry Street and Main Road in Eckington while firefighters tackled the blaze.

Officers urged people to ‘avoid’ the town and said roads in the area remained ‘extremely busy’ until 6pm.

A fire service spokesperson said today: “Crews used four breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire.

“Our stop message came through at 5.55pm when the incident was left in the hands of the property owners.

“Derbyshire police and Western Power were also in attendance.”

Bus company Stagecoach Yorkshire said they had been forced to make changes to services around Eckington.
