Fire which destroyed Derbyshire school ‘accidental’

Firefighters were first called to the fire at 12.12pm on Thursday, May 28.

Crews from across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire attended the scene and worked throughout the night continuing to damp the fire down and extinguish any hot spots.

Two firefighters who sustained minor injuries at the scene have now been released from hospital and are recovering at home.

Group Manager Dean Gazzard, who was the officer in charge at the fire said: “Workers carrying out the refurbishment of the school did everything they could to contain the fire and prevent its spread before the arrival of Firefighters.

“Fire crews worked in extreme heat and challenging conditions, but despite everyone’s efforts, the school was totally destroyed by the rapidly spreading fire.

“The Service sends its thoughts to everyone affected by the loss of Harrington School. Schools are at the heart of every community and we know the consequences of this fire will be felt heavily across the communities of Long Eaton.”

A school spokesman said: "Today (Thursday) has been an extremely difficult day.

"Mrs Wilmot and Mrs D were on site until nearly 9pm with the emergency services. We cannot thank them enough for their work and efforts in trying to save our school.

“ All the staff are devastated."
