Nazhrah Simpson, 12, of St Mary’s School, stormed to victory and clinched gold medals in the 60 metres with a time of 8.31 seconds, and in the 200 metres with a time of 27.18 seconds despite a groin injury.

Proud mum Tanya said: “She started running when she was only eleven years-old after a lot of people stopped me at her primary school and asked me if I had seen how good she is at running.

“There was a sports competition at Queen’s Park where she did very well and one parent said we should try and get her into a club.

“All the coaches were quite impressed and said they wanted to get her into competitions as much as possible and now she’s beating competitors in Under 15s events. She was drafted in for a competition in Birmingham and she ended up winning. Her dream is to get to the Olympics.”

Her latest victory at the NAIC event, at the English Institute of Sport, Sheffield, last month, now places the Chesterfield and District Athletic Club member in the lead for a top 2014 UK ranking by holding first place in the Power of 10 competition for the 200m and fourth place for the 60m.

Tanya added: “Whilst it is early in the season, Nazhrah has definitely made an impressive start.”
