Shirebrook family butchers is first 'Plastic Free Champion'

An environmental group has awarded its first accolade in the town’s campaign to reduce single-use plastic.

Inspired by BBC One’s War on Plastic, Ashley Taylor formed Plastic Free Shirebrook to try and reduce the amount of plastic ending up in landfill.

They set up community litter picks earlier this year and have just awarded the first Shirebrook business with the title of ‘Plastic Free Champion’.

Dave Straw & Son Family Butchers, on Market Street have been awarded the title after making a number of changes to the way they operate, which sees them becoming more environmentally friendly.Ashley said of the award: “We want to thank them for everything they have done to move towards being plastic-free.

"It really will make a difference and hopefully other businesses will follow suit.

"We also want to show appreciation for all the hard work they’ve been doing in the community during the coronavirus pandemic, they’ve been a lifeline for some.”They have made several changes to their business, including using wooden cutlery instead of plastic, replacing carrier bags and cups with biodegradable alternatives and offering discounts to customers who bring their own containers and cups when shopping with them.

Dave Straw said: “I had a few conversations with Ashley who was very passionate about cutting down on single-use plastic and made us realise just how much we used.

"It doesn’t take a lot to make small changes - we would like to see other businesses joining in whatever way they can.”
