Investigation into blaze at Derbyshire church fails to identify cause of fire – due to scale of damage and risk of collapse

The investigation into a blaze that engulfed a Derbyshire church has failed to identify the cause of the fire – due to the scale of the damage and the risk of structural collapse.

Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service (DFRS) were called to reports of a blaze that had broken out at a church on Chapel Street, Kilburn, Belper – deploying to the scene at 00.24am this morning (Friday, September 11).

A DFRS spokesperson said: “Fire crews from Alfreton, Ascot Drive, Belper, Heanor, Ilkeston, Nottingham Road and Ripley stations all attended the incident.

“Supported by an aerial ladder platform, firefighters used main line jets to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to neighbouring properties.

“Fire crews initially left the scene at 7.20am. Alfreton firefighters then attended again at 9.00am to deal with newly-identified hotspots, monitor conditions and assist the fire investigation.

“A joint fire and police investigation has been unable to determine the cause of a fire, due to the scale of the damage and risk of structural collapse.

“Final fire crews left the scene at 12:58 hours and handed over to the building's owner. No injuries have been reported.”
