Andy Smith and wife Rachael, of Grandfield Street, applied to the renovation programme last June after they grew tired of daily battles to mobilise their severely disabled son Isaac.

Andy, 40, said every day had become a struggle. The family had launched a campaign back in December to raise funds to help Isaac, who was born with a severe form of cerebral palsy, become more independent.

He said at the time: “We want to raise funds to pay for a new ground floor bedroom and wet room with specialist features, Isaac is growing and is very difficult to mobilise.”

Little did Andy know that his wishes were about to be granted.

After months of talks and visits from producers, the family were told they had been selected late February.

The team worked their magic from Tuesday, April 14 for a total of nine days.

The house and garden were transformed throughout, improving accessibility, giving Isaac his own bedroom and restoring the family lounge which was previously used as his room.

Andy said the family were still getting to grips with the changes,

He said: “It feels like we’re in somebody else’s home. We feel very humbled and overwhelmed by the response and support.

“To think so many people committed so much time for our family just means the world.

“When Isaac was born, our world was turned upside down, but the work of everyone involved has helped re-dress that balance somewhat. Isaac’s condition remains but our home now functions with him not against him.

“It just takes so much pressure off . We cannot thank everyone enough.”
