Ian Johnson, strategic director of children and younger adults, said: “We’re pleased that the majority of parents have got their first choice of school for their child.

“More than 11,500 applications have been processed by our school admissions team – an increase of nearly four per cent.

“Their hard work has meant that once again we have been able to meet the deadline for offering places, which we know is important for both parents and children.”

A council spokesman added: “There is no automatic right to a place at a particular school. The small number of parents who have not been allocated their first choice have the right to appeal to an independent panel. The closing date for appeals is May 15.”
