Sqdn Leader Jayne Lindley told how she helped raise money in 1985 to get the hospice opened and her late mother Alethea Lindley went on to become its manager for about 14 years during its formative time.

Jayne, who recently received an award for hosting the Queen’s Jubilee visit to RAF Cosford, said; “My late mother Alethea was and continues to be my inspiration to this day.

“She loved her time at the hospice and the charity has always meant a great deal to me especially because we were involved from the very beginning trying to raise money to get it open.”

Former Chesterfield St Helena pupil Jayne told how he she and her friend Sally Hunt, of Tibshelf, took on a charity bike ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats back in 1985 when Jayne was only 16 years-old to get the hospice started.

They helped raise £1,100 towards its start-up fund and she is now backing the Derbyshire Times’ £25,000 hospice appeal during the charity’s current 25th anniversary year.

Jayne’s mother Alethea joined the hospice team in 1991 after it opened in 1988 and helped shape its future as a vital service for Chesterfield and the surrounding area.

Alethea’s work led to the opening of the hospice’s new wing in 2005 to provide greater capacity.

Jayne also got back on her bike in 2008 and completed a sponsored ride with her sister Joanne from Chesterfield to the Lake District and they raised a further £2,500 in memory of their late mother.

Jayne added: “The continued invaluable work of Ashgate Hospice relies heavily on the generosity of public fundraising and I am pleased that the Derbyshire Times is supporting the hospice in its 25th year.”

So far DT Hospice Appeal fundraisers include a £120 donation from PCT dinner lady and sponsored slimmer Lynne Rouse, £400 from the Wheatsheaf pub, Newbold, Chesterfield, and pledges worth several thousand of pounds from Angela Lane and Loundsley Green pub the Olde House, Ashgate’s Crispin pub, marathon runner Kelly Donaldson as well as car boot fundraiser Anne Smedley.
