Derbyshire folk recall the day JFK was assassinated

The US President was shot by loner Lee Harvey Oswald in Dallas in 1963.

Three months before he died, he visited the Chatsworth estate to lay a wreath at his dead sister’s grave, which lies in the grounds of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire’s stateley home.

Kathleen Kennedy had married the Duke’s elder brother in 1944, but he was killed in the Second World War. She died in a plane crash in the south of France in 1948.

Recalling his shock death on the Derbyshire Times’ Facebook page, Dot Clarke said: “I was sat at home and stunned by his death. He was a wonderful President creating racial equality and hope for a peaceful world.”

Linda Clarke said: “I was at Chesterfield College of Art, studying photography. I was really sad when I saw the news on TV.”

Roger Faulkner said: “I was having a pint in the Crown and Greyhound pub in Dulwich Village. Everyone was in disbelief at the news.”

Eric Lowe said: “I was in the Fox and Goose in Wigley with a girl... before Mrs L. I remember it well.”

Maria Harris said: “I was lying in a cot in Singapore aged four months.”

Douglas Jones added: “I wasn’t even a twinkle in my mum and dad’s eyes.”
