DERBYSHIRE: Flash floods hit county

Forecasters said over three inches of rain had been dumped on the county in the past 12 hours.

Derbyshire fire service said many parts of Derbyshire had experienced flash floods.

A flood alert is currently in place for the River Rother from Chesterfield to Staveley.

The Met Office is warning of more beefy downpours during the coming week.

A spokesman said: “Areas of heavy, thundery rain will continue.

“The public is advised to take extra care and be prepared for the risk of localised disruption, mainly due to surface water flooding.”

A spokesman for Derbyshire fire service added: “Should you experience flash floods, close all windows and doors and try to stop water from entering your property using towels.

“Turn off any electrical and gas supplies and disconnect any equipment that uses water.

“Remain in your property unless it becomes a risk to life.”
