Derbyshire Fire & Rescue service to mark Last Post anniversary

The Last Post, reminiscent of the bugle that sounded at the end of each day to announce to allied troops that they could rest, is sounded daily under the gate by the local fire brigade in Ypres. Today it serves to remember those who sacrificed their lives in the First World War.

When the 30,000th Last Post is sounded by the buglers under the Menin Gate, it is hoped that a moment of silence and contemplation will be held in as many fire stations as possible around the world.

Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service will mark this event at 7pm today (July 9), at fire stations across the county.

Anyone wishing to mark this occasion alongside the fire service is welcome at the following stations taking part in the commemoration:

Ex-serviceman and station nanager for Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service, Gary Platts said: “The last post is an ode to an ode and acknowledges the sacrifice made by all our military personnel, across all conflict.

“It would be a fantastic honour and tribute to see as many people as possible, joining the firefighting community in marking this poignant occasion.”
