Derbyshire cop is fined for drink-driving and obstructing a police officer

Jeremy Richard Spender, 46, appeared at Chesterfield magistrates’ court on May 31 after he had originally been charged with two assaults and a drink-driving offence.

Spender was originally accused of assaulting two people, who cannot be named for legal reasons, and was also accused of exceeding the alcohol drink-drive limit.

Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard how the offences were alleged to have been committed on January 26 in Rowsley, near Matlock.

Spender, formerly of Sunnybank, Rowsley, is currently living at Theodore Road, Port Talbot, in Wales.

He pleaded guilty to exceeding the drink-drive limit - after a test found he had registered nearly twice the legal limit - and he was found guilty of obstructing a police constable.

The two assault matters were dismissed by the court after he was found not guilty of these offences.

The court heard how Spender is a police officer and he had been based at Buxton until theses allegations were raised. PC Spender had been with the Fairfield policing team, in Buxton, after serving in other areas of Derbyshire.

He was fined £640 for drink-driving and must pay a £64 victim surcharge and was disqualified from driving for 18 months. Spender was also fined £470 for obstructing a police constable in the execution of his duty and he was ordered to pay £200 costs.

Deputy Chief Constable Peter Goodman said: “PC Spender remains suspended from duty and will now face disciplinary action relating to alleged misconduct issues.”
