Danger warning above Castleton as mineshaft collapses

Derbyshire County Council is warning motorists above Castleton to take care after an old mineshaft has collapsed and left a huge hole.

The ground has given way on land at Sparrowpit leaving a gaping hole at the side of the B6061 road from the tiny village to the top of Winnat’s Pass.

A temporary road closure has been imposed by the council until December 15 on B6061 from its junction with the A623 to a point adjacent to Rowter Farm.

Motorists are advised to take an alternative route using the B6061, Rushup Edge, Sheffield Road, A6, and A623.

A council spokesman stated access will be maintained whenever reasonably possible on the affected length of road which will re-open as soon as work is finished.

The council apologised for any inconvenience caused while work takes place.
