Rescue party spends two hours looking for missing man, 74, who had already gone home

A 20-person search party spent more than two hours looking for a missing 74-year-old man in complete darkness – only to find out he had returned home.

Glossop Mountain Rescue Team received a call-out at 5.15pm on Monday (9 November) after the man and his daughter got lost while walking to the B-29 crash site at Higher Shelf Stones.

A spokesperson said: “The 74-year-old male was said to be tired and found it difficult to continue.

“The team initially tried to locate the two by using the phone finder tracking software, but unfortunately we had no response from the lost pair.”

Twenty people then split into eight sections, searching corridors and cloughs which lead up to, and off from, Higher Shelf Stones before utilising two search dogs from the Search and Rescue Dog Association.

The spokesperson added: “We were eventually able to make contact with one of them by phone to find out they had returned home safe and well."

The search ended at 7.45pm.
