Police asked mourners to leave Killamarsh funeral this afternoon after more people than the amount permitted under coronavirus restrictions turned up.

Officers said there was a heightened police presence in the High Street area of the town this afternoon to ensure the funeral took place safely.

However, a number of people who were not part of the main funeral group turned up at the event before being asked to leave by police.

A spokeperson for Derbyshire Police said: “Due to a large number of people potentially attending a funeral in the Killamarsh area today (Tuesday, March 9) - officers were in the area in order to ensure the event took place safely.

“A number of roads were closed in the area in order to manage the incident.

“A small number of people who were not part of the funeral group – the numbers of which were in line with current national restrictions – did arrive but left after being asked to do so by officers.”
