Men arrested after swans and ducks shot on Chesterfield Canal in South Yorkshire

Two men have been arrested after a pair of swans and four ducks were shot in South Yorkshire – killing most of them.

A woman discovered the birds on the Chesterfield Canal in the Turnerwood area on the morning of May 3.

Hilary, a female swan who was nesting five eggs, had been shot in the head and sadly died. It is not know what happened to the eggs.

Her mate Stocky was also shot as he attempted to defend her.

According to police, Stocky is making a ‘steady recovery’.

Officers said four ducks were also sadly killed in the incident.

On Wednesday night, South Yorkshire Police confirmed two men had been arrested in connection with the crime and added that enquiries were ongoing.
