Derbyshire knifeman stabbed two and chased shoppers through supermarket

Jamie Austin put down a bottle of vodka and brandished a knife, telling two teenagers: "I'm sorry, I have to do this," before lunging at them.

The pair were able to run away from the cashpoint, outside Sainsburys, on Boyer Street, Derby, on May 6, last year.

Austin then stabbed another man in the back when he tried to use the cashpoint, prosecutor Sarah Slater told Derby Crown Court, on Wednesday.

As the man backed away, clutching his wound, Austin followed him, chasing staff, shoppers and a security guard through the shop.

Austin went back outside and stabbed a second man in his side as he got out of his mobility scooter.

CCTV showed him collapsing in the shop doorway. As staff tried to help, Austin grappled with the guard and entered the shop again.

The guard's body-cam footage showed the first victim shouting and swearing from behind the cash register and throwing a punch at Austin.

"The security guard repeatedly tried to calm the situation down," said Ms Slater. "He is trying to keep them apart and the defendant out of the shop."

Austin told his victim: "I will say to you I'm sorry. I have a lot going on in my head."

As he left the store, he told other members of the public: "It'll stab you. I'll stab all of you."

Armed police arrived and arrested him.

The court heard he has previous convictions for harassment and breaching court orders.

Nicola Hunter, mitigating, said Austin had made progress during the 12 months he has spent in custody.

"Thankfully the injuries weren't as serious as they could have been,” she said.

“He was at this time a very troubled young man. He struggled with alcohol. He has sought to get help."

She said he had alcohol-free for six months and was working as a hospital porter when he relapsed into drinking and was hospitalised.

"He went to A&E the day before saying he felt suicidal," she said. "They told him to go home and that was one of the catalysts for him drinking.”

Austin, speaking from HMP Nottingham, said: "It was a moment of stupidity and madness and I will never do anything like this again.

"It was me in the wrong place and the wrong time. I can only apologise. I am sorry."

Austin, 31, of Warner Street, Derby, pleaded guilty to two counts of wounding with intent, affray, and possession of a bladed article in public.

Judge Nirmal Shant QC said he suffers from emotonally unstable borderline personality disorder and alcohol triggered "sudden acute shifts in his behaviour" which could result in violence to others.

"It's highly likely similar patterns of offending will occur in the future," she said.

She sentenced Austin to eight years in prison, with an extended license period of four years. He will serve two thirds of the sentence in prison before he is considered for parole.
