Tyler Wilkinson armed himself with the 50-cms-long blade when he joined the group attack at 11.30pm, on February 2, last year, prosecutor Hal Ewing said.

Later, the woman and a male friend ventured outside and saw eight or nine young men, with one of them waving a big pole about, Derby Crown Court heard, on Tuesday.

Wilkinson's DNA was found on the handle of the machete and the man's blood was found on the blade.

The woman told police: "The incident scared me. It was totally unprovoked."

Mr Ewing told the court she was the ex-partner of one of the gang, who has been sentenced separately.

The male victim gave no statement, but his mother, whose house had been attacked, said she was "very shocked and angry."

Mr Ewing said Wilkinson was 18 at the time, and had previous convictions for common assault in 2015 and, in 2018, received 12 months' detention for GBH.

In November last year he was sent to a Young Offenders Institute for two years, for affray and threats to kill, committed in August 2019.

William Bennett, mitigating, said Wilkinson suffers from attention deficit disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but the conditions were being helped with new medication.

"There are these underlying difficulties,” he said. “He was not the oldest of the defendants in this affray."

Wilkinson, 19, of Bevan Drive, Inkersall, pleaded guilty to affray and having a bladed article in public.

Judge Nirmal Shant QC told him he has "amassed a considerable record for violence," but added he has "waited some time for this sentence to be dealt with."

She gave him a total of 15 months, which will be added to his current sentence, and imposed a five year restraining order.
