Chesterfield single mum who conned £12,000 out of elderly care home resident jailed

A Chesterfield single mum who swindled £12,000 from an elderly man while working at a Dronfield Woodhouse care home has been jailed for 15 months.

Joanna Cocking, 31, borrowed the cash from her 89-year-old victim between December 2019 and February last year - initially intending to pay it back.

However Derby Crown Court heard as she continued to accept money from the vulnerable resident at Meadow Grange Care Home in Dronfield Woodhouse the money was never repaid.

Cocking, of Hazlehurst Lane, Chesterfield, admitted fraud by false representation.

A spokesperson for Meadow Grange Care Home said: “When the allegations came to light the employee was suspended with immediate effect and resigned before the disciplinary process could take place.

"We informed the police and made the appropriate safeguarding and DBS referrals.

"This is a matter of enormous regret and we are thankful that the court proceedings provided a satisfactory outcome for the resident who remains in our care.”
