Jill and Simon Turner, who own Hasland Pet Supplies on Mansfield Road, Hasland, said a customer came into their shop and told them their ‘lovely’ dog passed away after being poisoned while out walking in the area.

They said the death came just days after another dog was apparently poisoned in Hasland but thankfully survived.

Mrs Turner said: “We’ve heard that the posion could be slug pellets mixed with cat biscuits.”

Mr Turner added: “It’s just terrible.

“We’d like to urge dog owners to be vigilant and to be aware of what their pets are picking up and possibly eating.

“It might also be worth putting muzzles on them when they’re being taken for a walk.”

In a Facebook post – which has been shared nearly 2,500 times since it was published on Monday – Hasland Pet Supplies said: “Another dog has been poisoned in Hasland. Sadly she has passed away.

“She was on her lead the entire walk and she was only sniffing the hedge bottoms. She didn’t come out eating anything, only licking her lips, but within 10 minutes she’d collapsed.

“She’d been walked along Hasland Green and down the narrow jitty towards the new housing estate.

“Her poor owners came into the shop to tell us.

“She was a lovely little dog who was out enjoying her walk and now she's gone.

“It’s so sad.”
