Chesterfield man was racially abusive to a serving police officer in the town

A Chesterfield man who racially harassed a police officer in the town has been given a community order by magistrates.

Records show that John Darren Holmes committed the offence in St John’s Road, Chesterfield on July 17.

Holmes, 49, of Thirlmere Road, Newold, admitted the offence when he appeared before Chesterfield Magistrates’ Court on July 27.

Because the officer in question was of Asian descent, the court also ruled that the offence had been racially aggravated.

Magistrates gave him a 12-month community order to include 10 rehabilitation activity days with the Probation Service.

He was also fined £120 and ordered to pay £50 in compensation to the officer he abused.

Additionally, he must pay £85 in prosecution costs and a £95 victim surcharge - paid by all defendants to support victim services.

The fine was increased because of the racially aggravated element to the offence, but the defendant’s guilty plea was taken into consideration by magistrates.
