Jack David Stevens was involved in the collision on Spinner Croft, Chesterfield, on January 25 this year, Chesterfield Magistrates were told on Tuesday, July 14.

The 24-year-old, of Old Street, Hasland, admitted possession of a bladed article when he appeared before the court.

Prosecuting, Lynn Bickley, said: “It was a six-inch kitchen knife. He had been moving house and the knife had fallen out of one of the boxes and he put it in the door pocket so he would remember to take it into the house - although this happened in December and the accident occurred in January.”

Mitigating, David Gittins said police only searched the vehicle because Stevens was a known drug dealer and is awaiting sentencing at crown court on narcotics charges.

He said: “What is of most significance is that, as well as the knife, police also found a fork in the door pocket. He put it in the door and forgot it was there.

“He’s awaiting sentencing on conspiracy to supply Class A drugs and they haven’t been dealt with yet due to the coronavirus, and he admits that he’s slipped back into cannabis use because he’s been bored.”

Magistrates gave Stevens a 24-week prison sentence, suspended for 10 months, and ordered him to complete 16 rehabilitation activity days with the Probation Service.

He was also ordered to pay £85 in prosecution costs and a £122 victim surcharge.
